The 10-Year Treasury Yield Hit 5.31% in October, the Highest Since 2002. Week to Week, It Told You Little About Bitcoin

The yield on 10-year U.S. Treasury notes, the benchmark rate behind mortgages and corporate loans, closed at 5.31% on October 5, its highest since May 2002, and was 5.12% on October 20, up from 4.00% a year earlier. Over the same year bitcoin fell 23%. But across 53 weeks, the direction rates moved in a given week said almost nothing about which way bitcoin went. The dollar said a little more.

Key takeaways

  1. The 10-year Treasury yield closed at 5.31% on October 5, 2026, the highest close since 5.32% on May 14, 2002. It was 5.12% on October 20, up from 4.00% on October 20, 2025 [1].
  2. Bitcoin closed at $82,001.70 on October 18, 2026, down 23% from $107,143.91 a year earlier. Its high for the year was $114,557.10 on October 26, 2025; its low was $58,531.90 on June 30, 2026 [3].
  3. In the 27 weeks (Friday to Friday, October 10, 2025 to October 16, 2026) when the yield rose, bitcoin fell in only 12. Rates and bitcoin did not move as opposites week to week [1][3].
  4. The broad dollar index ended the year almost where it started (120.67 to 121.40). In the 26 weeks it rose, bitcoin fell in 16. A stronger dollar was a mild headwind, not a rule [2][3].

Why this rate matters

The 10-year Treasury yield10-year Treasury yieldWhat lending to the US government for ten years pays each year, the benchmark safe return that other assets, bitcoin included, are weighed against.See it on the site → is what the U.S. government pays to borrow for ten years. Mortgage rates and many business loans are priced off it, so when it rises, borrowing gets dearer across the economy. It is also the return investors give up by holding something that pays no interest, like bitcoin or gold. That is why higher rates are usually described as bad news for bitcoin.

This year the rate climbed a long way. It was 4.00% on October 20, 2025, reached 5% on September 15, and closed at 5.31% on October 5, 2026, its highest close since May 14, 2002. On October 20 it was 5.12% 1. Before this year, the last close at or above 5.12% was in July 2007.

What bitcoin did

Over the same twelve months bitcoin fell from $107,143.91 (October 18, 2025) to $82,001.70 (October 18, 2026), a 23% drop, after touching $58,531.90 on June 30 3. Read at that distance, the textbook story fits: rates up, bitcoin down.

Up close it does not. BTChub compared each Friday's close with the one before, for 53 weeks from October 10, 2025 to October 16, 2026. In the 27 weeks the 10-year yield rose, bitcoin fell in 12 and rose in 15. In the 26 weeks the yield fell or held, bitcoin rose in only 9 13. Measured as a correlation, the weekly link was +0.14 on a scale from −1 to +1: close to none, and if anything the wrong way round for the textbook.

The dollar did slightly better as a signal. The Federal Reserve's broad dollar index, which tracks the dollar against the currencies of major U.S. trading partners, rose in 26 of the 53 weeks, and bitcoin fell in 16 of them. The weekly correlation was −0.22: a weak tendency for bitcoin to slip when the dollar firms 23. Over the whole year the index barely moved, from 120.67 on October 16, 2025 to 121.40 on October 16, 2026.

What to take from it

Rates set the backdrop. A world paying 5% on safe government debt is a harder place for any asset that pays nothing, and that pressure shows up over months. But in any single week, bitcoin's move is mostly about bitcoin: flows, sentiment, mining and news. Reading one week's rate move as a bitcoin forecast would have been right less than half the time this year.

This is one year of weekly data, and correlations change. BTChub's Macro page shows the current 10-year yield and dollar index next to bitcoin, updated daily, so you can watch the backdrop without over-reading it.

Rates set the weather. They don't call next week's move.
