Why we track it · The rawest read of damage: no model, no parameters — just price against the highest close so far. The other side · Says nothing about direction. −50% preceded both recoveries and further halvings; depth is not a floor.
Drawdown is how far the current price sits below its running all-time high — a plain measure of how deep the market is off its peak.

How it's computed
For each day, divide the close by the highest close seen up to that day and subtract 1, giving a percentage at or below zero. It carries no valuation bands; the zones below are descriptive context only. Computed off daily closes through the latest row in btc-history.json — a price-only series refreshed weekly by an automated, validation-gated pipeline, so the tail can trail the live market by up to a week between refreshes. The current reading stitches the live spot when available.
